Since 1954, performance data has been collected for all registered Red Angus cattle. Reported as expected progeny differences (EPDs), these genetic predictions are one tool used by breeders to supply quality beef and breeding stock. These EPDs reveal important selection and breeding performance data for comparing traits, including but not limited to, birth, weaning and yearling weights, and calving ease. Using this reporting system, buyers can select stock to compliment and/or improve on their current beef cattle programs. Total Herd Reporting (THR), implemented by the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) in 1995, requires this performance data of every registered Red Angus female and her calf.
Red Angus genetics can fit into any structured crossbreeding program. Keeping in mind that the herd bull provides the bulk of the herd’s genetic makeup and improvements, Red Angus sires effectively bring top genetics into herds with more cost efficiency than culling or attempting to breed up commercial dams. Using the above-mentioned EPDs, producers can select sires that will help them reach their profit level and desired market.
Red Angus cattle are known for their maternal qualities. Replacement heifers sired by Red Angus bulls can increase maternal traits within any herd. Calving ease and longevity within the herd are performance factors related to the Red Angus breed.
Feeder calves sired by registered Red Angus bulls or out of registered Red Angus cows are eligible for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). This program, which is USDA Process Verified, allows calves to be tagged as having certified Red Angus genetics - genetics known for quality beef products.
